First Draft..........
Well we were supposed to hand in our first draft of our research essay on Friday and I have to admit, I first did it this morning. I believe that my expectations of myself are completely higher than what are expected of our first draft and I had to look at Assignment #15 sheet over and over and over again. Because I wanted it to be perfect and I wanted to have at least 10 pages of writing to hand in, but I did not. I guess I did not have the kind of progress on the essay that I had wanted, partially because I want to see what comments the group has on it and to find out what questions need to be answered. What are ones instinctual actions with a group such as developmentally delayed or autistic when you are trying to communicate with them? Do you automatically assume that they communicate like we do and understand like we do or do you treat them as if they are automatically slower than yourself? Just curious what people think and what their thoughts are. Please let me know so that my essay can have information that is going to be informative to you.

Thats a very good question to pose to people when talking about interaction and disability. Some people undoubtedly stereotype individuals with disabilities, yet I believe it takes interaction with these people to truly understand them and their disability. Especially in regards to autism, people may believe that these people are severly inhibited by their condition, yet as I found, its quite the opposite and they may even interact with people with mild forms of the disability and fail to be aware of it.
As the saying goes, "Never judge a book by it's cover." Working in medicine has opened my eyes to all sorts of different experiences. first of all, I grew up a country boy and then moved to the city. Totally different experiences! but moving to the city I began learning about the culture of the inner city as well as different diagnoses.
With th topic of diagnoses, there are all sorts of syndromes that cause facial and structural deformities but does not have any influence on the mental capabilities of these individuals. So just because someone may look like they have a developmental issue......never assume! Research first. Ask questions!
